'WAR': An Art History Lecture
by Marcy B. Freedman
Artist and art historian Marcy B. Freedman will provide a survey of the diverse ways in which western artists - from Antiquity to the 20th century - have addressed the topic of war. From the ennobling depictions of military leaders to the appropriately horrific representations of actual warfare, the images in this presentation will demonstrate that art reflects the values of its era, as well as the position of the artist in society. Indeed, the trajectory of this lecture will remind us that art can be used as a tool to serve those in power or as a tool of self-expression and socio-political commentary. Freedman’s talk provides the context for the current exhibition at HV MOCA entitled WAR. This show clearly reveals the ability of our artists and our art institutions to share a broad spectrum of ideas and opinions about some of the most painful and controversial issues facing us today.
